R U OK? is a mental health initiative in Australia that began in 2009 and is now a national day dedicated to suicide prevention.

Each year hundreds of thousands partake in R U OK? Day across Australia, with a mission to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

Swire MLI’s Kalari division embraced the concept and held a series of awareness and inclusion activities across its sites in September.

Two R U OK? champions were allocated per site to assist in organising the weeks activities and helped encourage employees to prevent, engage and connect with each other.

Throughout the week there were presentations, morning teas, lunches and BBQs to help facilitate and inspire employees to feel confident asking the question of their colleagues “Are you OK?” to open dialogue. Research has shown that communication is key to positively impacting mental health.

The presentations also showcased the options available to all employees to seek help, including the free and confidential counselling Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Employees were engaged and involved in the activities; sharing stories and personal experiences in their lives that were eased through peer support, communication and someone to listen without judgement.
